THE SWISS NATIONAL DAY

About the Swiss National Day 2025 in NYC

The Swiss National Day in New York City (SND NYC) is an annually held event commemorating the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Organized by the various Swiss organizations in New York, it brings together Swiss, Swiss-Americans, and friends of Switzerland, on or around Switzerland's official August 1st National Day for a day of festivities and celebration.

The SND celebration is one of the largest and most prominent event of its kind in the United States. Every year, thousands of families and individuals come to enjoy and mingle in New York City, whilst enjoying fine Swiss food and drinks, distinctly Swiss entertainment, and activities for people of all ages. The SND also is host to the Swiss Village, which features other Swiss non-profits, clubs, and vendors presenting uniquely Swiss items.

After a tremendous success of the 2024 Swiss National Day, we were able to secure the scenic location of the 2023 and 2024 celebrations again - the Hudson, featuring a unique and scenic view of the river and providing a nice summer breeze during the hot summer days.

History of the Swiss National Day

Switzerland is one of the oldest States in the world. More than 700 years ago, the inhabitants of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden signed a contract of mutual aid and protection, the “Federal Charter”, which has since been considered to be Switzerland’s deed of foundation. This solemn oath, taken on August 1, 1291 on the legendary Rütli meadow overlooking Lake Lucerne, was mainly an act of rebellion against the Habsburgs, the rulers of the kingdom of Austria, who at the time were planning to extend their sphere of influence as far as the territories bordering the St. Gotthard.
